wouldnt a darker take on the zelda universe be deluxe? they've been going for the light-hearted adventure approach for far too long now, its time to return to the gloomy atmosphere of majora's mask but push it even further

here is a general idea of what i'd like to see zelda become

hyrule castle, now rundown and rife with bandits and prostitutes

the new princess zelda

a reimagined gannon pictured here with a succubus he will use to seduce link and draw into a trap

this guy could be a guide, like the new tingle but less annoying

I agree 100% the series should stick with a more Majora's Mask approach.

However, the example pictures you gave... *hands TC a flameshield*

I wouldn't mind a Majora's Mask style darkness to Zelda but not a dystopoian 1984 style Zelda.

No, it certainly does not. It may need to change it's formula, but we have yet to see what Skyward Sword will bring. If I want a darker, grittier Zelda, I'll get Darksiders again.

TP and MM both kinda went that direction. MM is one of the creepiest games I have played. More on a psychological sense than, "OMG THAT GUY KILLED THAT OTHER GUY THEN KILLED HIMSELF! OOOOOMMMMMMMMGGGGGGG LOOK AT THE BLUD!!!"

The only changes Zelda needs is structural changes, not the kind of 'dark gritty reimagining' that you posted. Although yes, I would not be averse to a new title that was as dark as Majora's Mask was.

I remember walking past the dead Deku Shrub in the first 2 mins of the game. Incredibly sad, considering his death is what made it possible for Link to go on.

And then you met his father later in the game... Powerful stuff.

Twilight Princess was a dark Zelda. It was my least favorite console Zelda although still great. I feel as though a dark Zelda could be amazing, but it needs to have more lively and interesting towns than TP did, AND it needs to have the contrast of happy and sad. By this I mean it cannot be dark 24/7. Sadness and despair don't set in as heavy if the world feels like that all the time. I feel as though Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker did this really well. Especially Ocarina of Time. The world seems happy and relatively at peace as a kid, but when years pass the world just goes to hell and the feeling is ominous.

The pics in the OP are cringe worthy and ****ing awful. Any version of that type of Zelda should not exist at all. Now if I could get a game that was more like Majora's Mask than I'd be all happy. The way a dark Zelda should be done.

No no no. When I think of "dark and gritty Zelda" I think of Darksiders, and that game is just awful.

That being said I wouldn't mind a game like Majora's Mask in tone. It's dark and mature, yes. But not gritty. Nothing ruins a game for me more than when it takes itself far too seriously.

Darksiders was boring beyond words. That and the art direction was straight out of a bad saturday morning cartoon, and not even from our Era Jim. Not even the quality stuff from our era. But garbage from now D=

Pretty much. MM was great because it was uniquely bizarre when compared to say, A Link to the Past and Wind Waker, but I dont want the series to be stuck in the bleak, depressive reality MM gave us from now on. I little bit of everything, i say.

Yup, becasue Zelda totally needs to be a part of the black-leather, dark fantasy trend. I like my games to be professional, not s*** fan fiction, thank you. And Majora's Mask was perfectly dark as everyone else has said. And I certainly wouldn't be opposed to seeing them go back to that kind of setting (it was my favorite one).

What irks me is that you call it a change in the formula, but making everything into a bondage-fetish game doesn't change the formula. You need to check your thoughts before you post them.

The great thing about Nintendo franchises is that they rarely adopt current trends. You will never play a Zelda game and think "ROFLMAO, that's so XX amount of years ago". If Nintendo did what you want them to do with Zelda, people in 20 years will play that hypothetical game and think "LOL, remember Twilight/Vampire Diaries/True Blood and the whole vampire fad?"

It also needs regenerating health, a short checkpoint system, competitive mulitplayer, a ranking system, unlocks, character upgrades, perks, leaderboard, clans, and a massive brown-gray color pallet and tons of swearing.

Yeah, that's next gen.

no..it really doesnt. we have enough dark, moody and gritty games and we also know how badly ninty screw up when doing that (Metroid other M...what a farce). the series needs a structural overhaul and an injection of some new ideas. it doesnt need to be zeldavania or van link.

Yes, because Link should be some wisecracking, angsty womanising teenager. Splattered in blood and constantly blurring the lines between good and evil.

Yes, lets make zelda dark and gritty, OWAIT we already did that with Twighlight Princess. And what was the end result? A souless game with a chronic identity crisis. The only reason the game was made like that is because GCN fans' wanted their own 'GTA', to proove nintendo wasn't kiddy. But just Like GTA4 everyone is singing it's praises at firt, but fast forward 2 years and everyone is agreement that they're both well crafted pieces of coal.

You do gritty reboots, you take out the charm. Hey you might get some good in return as Warrior Within, but both games are completely immemorable without the charm.

Zelda needs evolution, not revolution. Stick with the mechanics from WW with a few additions; have a fleshed out storyline, elongated yet meaningful sidequests, and a more content filled overworld jam packed with charming and funny characters. Thats what the story needs, not cross-genre bullsh*t, if you want it to have other games mechanics, why not just appreciate those games instead?
