Looks like someone wants more of a tactical RTS game... try out Joint Task Force and Faces of War.. no base building there either.. but you CAN plan out the attacks.. not to mention being able to wipe out an entire map with just one unit (JTF).. also in JTF you can upgrade units like rangers, commandos, medics, snipers, vehicle crew, engineers, pilots and your hero units.. Its very tactical if you try not to spend money on "more units" and just use what you get at the campaign start. Faces of War is beautiful and more of a Commandos type game.. (just with more units).. JTF is 19.95 on STEAM, worth a good look at.. :)

WiC is okay.. just not as tactical as I like.. If you enjoyed Rise of Legends JTF is very similar.. (just more ability to take what units your upgraded to the next map through promotions).. The storyline of JTF sux, but the game is itself is exceedingly fun to play.. WiC does a damn good job with the story and has the detail that I enjoy, just it seems like you don't get to just prance around a map without having to use more units..

Same problem here It locks up for 2-3 second when some one is talking on mic usually this happens atleast 2-3 times every map.

I have Q6600 Cpu

2 gig ram

1950XT

I have GA P35 DS3R mother board i think the problem is causeing of the onboard audio?

metroid_mario

I am pretty sure my computer can handle this game I have exact same problem......... This happend when some one usually talkin on the microphone.

That is called "lagg"... either turn off the mic option completely or deal with it.. btw, what connection are you using? Cable or DSL?

Personally, I felt Joint Task Force had better graphics.. that and Faces of War (WWII based)

About the gameplay.. All you have to do is turtle in the game.. set up tank traps.. then razor wire then machine gun nests.. then do it again when you take a command point.. basically its the old "sand bag technique" that was very effective in C&C 1.. (though that has been fixed with the Windows 95 versions.

Just like Ascendancy as well.. just cover your planet's space with Orbital Cloaks and the AI will try to go into your space but not be able to.. Personally, CoH isn't that hard really... just time consuming.. extremely so.

Adrian.. you forgot a few.. like Grand Theft Auto 1-2

Also Maniac Mansion.. (there is a remake out there)

As well as the Privateer (Wing Commander) remake

Also, be sure to check out the other Thread by NutDave about Games For Windows aka Computer Gaming World.. list of 101 Free games...

I foresee that Adrian has his work cut out for him on this one..
Unless your just strickly looking at 2007 year games... I believe the Maniac Mansion remake (non rom) was made this year... GTA 1-2 was made available in what? 2005 or so? anyways.. there is just literally hundreds upon hundreds of free games out there..

Great job btw.. as always :)

The first Battlezone came out in 1998 and the second one came out in 1999.thusaha

I liked the one Atari made in wireframe.. back in the early 80s.. 1981 I believe.. The arcade version made you look through some niffty goggles to see the screen... and the controls were kinda awkward but worked well..

Lol, all the games you guys have recommened are about 4-5 years old, sad that you consider those classics. As for my recommendation: Pong.

Heh no really: Chrono Trigger, metroid, super metroid, Double Dragon, Chrono Cross( a bit of a stretch), The legend of Zelda(original), Zork, Kings quest

Delius

Although I agree its hard to call anything under 10 years old a classic, the OP asked for recommendations from 1997-2004.

Quake 2 barely meets those requirements as a "classic" game.. I believe classics (in terms of gaming which evolves faster than music and any other form of artistic expression) should be given status at maybe 5yrs or more... Just remember the types of things we saw back in 2002.. MOHAA just came out.. now tell me games have gone beyond the Q3 engine.. :)

Rise of Legends/Rise of Nations Thrones and Patriots

Joint Task Force is a great RTS IMO... bad cutscenes and voice work.. but the game itself is pretty damn good. More Tactical than most games in the genre.. available via STEAM...

Command and Conquer was kinda hard for me when I first started.. but using the sandbag technique (note: does not work unless you have the DOS version of the game) was a snap to beat.. essentially, all you had to do was surround yourself with sandbags and the enemy units would stop at the bags and not cross them.. basically, you could wall yourself up and just turtle your way through.. this is also true of Company of Heroes.. Just set up a ton of Tank traps and razor wire and just make use of every spot to set up machine gun nests.. you'll win.. but it will take hella long..

Starcraft.. don't tell me you thought it was easy your first time playing.. that is utter BS.. lets see the mission where you have to stem off the horde of Zerg for 30minutes was kinda stressful.. (back when I first played it)

Red Alert... hard little game even after playing C&C and Covert Ops.. not many ways to "fool" the AI in it... good game though..

I would recommend Act of War.. easy as cake.. even on the hardest difficulty.. and plays much like Joint Task Force.. one unit fully upgraded.. (as in a lvl 3 heavy sniper) can take out almost an entire map.. (that is if you baby him) :)

High Treason was like they wanted the game to become frustrating even to seasoned RTS players.... wouldn't recommend the expansion.. but the main game is excellent...
