[QUOTE="mrbojangles25"]Hmmm, I have a hard time thinking that letter is real. It demonstrates a total lack of professionalism on both sides. I know Thompson is a luny, but he is also a lawyer and resorting to childish banter is not in his best interests. Even worse, the conduct of the Take 2 representative stooped to his level. I think its fake, but then again I wouldnt be suprised if it was real.Mediocre_man90
I've got to disagree with you there. the tone fits with all of the letters I've seen written by him in various places. keep in mind this man's track record. This is the guy who:
1:repeatedly accused Janet Reno of being a closet lesbian, at one point slipping her a note that had three boxes, labeled "Homosexual", "Bisexual", and "Heterosexual", along with the text "I, Janet Reno, am (please check one)"
2.during his case against 2Live Crew sent his opponentsphotocopies of his driver's license with pictures of batman pasted over his own, wore a Batman watch, and accused one member of the group of being "the Joker"
3.called 2 Live Crew "a bunch of clowns who traffic toxic waste to kids," and claimed that "the 'social commentary' on this album is akin to a sociopath's discharging his AK-47 into a crowded schoolyard, with the machine gun bursts interrupted by Pee Wee Herman's views on politics."
4.Claimed that "In every school shooting, we find that kids who pull the trigger are video gamers."
5.described the proliferation of games by Sony as "Pearl Harbor 2"
6.His response to Take 2 suing him over his attempts to block GTA IV and Manhunt 2 from being sold? "I have been praying, literally, that Take-Two and its lawyers would do something so stupid, so arrogant, so dumb, even dumber than what they have to date done, that such a misstep would enable me to destroy Take-Two."
7.Began campaigning and making claims about Bully, a year before it's actual release.
8.After a judge dismissed his case to block Bully from being sold after viewing the game, he told the judge "You did not see the game... You don't even know what it was you saw."
9.Accused The Sims of being pronographic material, despite the fact that sims are not anatomically correct.
10. was asked by the National Institute on Media and the Family (an anti-violent game watchdog group) to stop invoking their name in his campaigns, claiming that he cast the organization's name in a bad light.
11. Claimed that "nobody shoots anybody in the face unless you're a hit man or a video gamer."
12. claimed that "When a kid who has never killed anyone in his life goes on a rampage and looks like the Terminator, he's a video gamer."
13. Sent a letter to Bill Gates stating "Mr. Gates, your company is potentially legally liable (for) the harm done at Virginia Tech. Your game, a killing simulator, according to the news that used to be in the Post, trained him to enjoy killing and how to kill." Keep in mind that the game in question, Counter-Strike, has no connection to MS other than the fact that they published a port to the Xbox.
14.Tried to get the guys from Penny Arcade arrested for donating money to charity. (my personal favorite)
15. Once asked a judge to declare the Florida Bar Association unconstitutional.
As you can clearly see, his entire career has been based on a lack of professionalism. These are just some of the bigger missteps, there are plenty more where those came from. He constantly resorts to childish insults, threats, immature behavior, and a general lack of professionalism all around.
The fact is, he's messing with the wrong group of people. There are countless gamers who are smarter than him, speak more eloquently than him, can form a much better argument than him, and would gladly take any opportunity to prove it.
You forgot banning Ice-T's Cop Killer song.
He was first trying to ban music like 2 Live Crew etc before he jumped onto games.. now music has more explicit lyrics than anything else, and there is not even a ban in sight! I guess kids don't get influenced by music anymore.. well except for Janet Jackson's nipple shot. :P
BTW, excellent post :)
