I'm located in Alberta, I recently checked out a Best Buy but kind of got cut short looking at headphones due to sales-people swarming me (and odly enough telling me to look online and elsewhere for headphones) Red Deer to be more precise. I'm thinking of going to a music store to see if they have any decent headphones.Jynxzor
You can try Parkland Audio & Music:

G8 5550-45th St
Red Deer, Alberta
T4N ILI Canada

p. 403.309.9499

Says they carry Stanton, Behringer, AKG, Sennheiser, and Pioneer headphones. They might have something. An AKG K240 is a gem around $100 USD.

Avoid HMV, they look overpriced. Visions Electronics looks like it might have a decent selection; I see Audio-Technica, Shure, Sennheiser in their lineup, and it looks like you have one locally:

2119 50 Avenue
Red Deer, AB T4R 1Z4, Canada

(403) 340-1750

But that's all I'm Googling for you: The rest is up to you! :P

Good luck,

Boz

They are indeed the HD700's, and the only pair in North America, according to the gentleman to my right. I want to answer detailed questions about the quality of the headphones, but they were open-back and I was in a video game convention hall, making it difficult to properly evaluate them. They put on some Pink Floyd, but I kind of regret it in retrospect, given that it's a studio album, with all the baggage that comes along with that.

If I had to summarize what I was able to get out of them, it would be an immediate presence. They were super-comfortable, with velour-like cups that reminded me of the Beyerdynamic DT770s. It wasn't too tight, either, though I wasn't wearing my glasses as I normall do. The bass was punchy without being overpowering, though the vocals were too muddied by ambient noise to give them a real evaluation, so I'm not going to comment there. There was zero sibilence, which was nice, and each cymbal crash was nice and defined without making me wince, even at high volume. Pretty nice looking aesthetically, too.

The HD800 was right there next to them, but I didn't bother given the setting. They had a fancy solid-state amplifier with a built-in DAC and storage, but I don't know which one it was off-hand (I was a bit overstimulated at the time). I might know it if I saw it; it was blue, about two inches high, had smaller digital readouts on the front, and two 1/4" stereo jacks on the front.

I didn't hear anything that blew me out of the water. The sound reminded me a lot of the Grado 325is, which is by no means an insult. This is probably more a failing of my ability to critically hear: Once I get beyond a certain threshold I have a tougher time discerning the difference, and that's been about the level of the Denon AH-D5000.

Lastly, one thing that irked me was that Sennheiser is marketing the vented magnet structure as if it were some huge advancement, despite that vented magnets have been around for decades. I mentioned as much to the rep, and he said it was the first time it was being used in headphones. If this really is novel in headphones, I'm surprised it took them this long to catch up to something you might find in a mid-level home speaker or most any car subwoofer!

I hope you've enjoyed this little tease of the HD700's. It was a pleasure to listen to them, and the Sennheiser folks were great.

Happy gaming,

Boz

[QUOTE="Bozanimal"]NVIDIATI's DT880 recommendation is spot on, it's an excellent closed-back headphone, very comfortable, if a bit bass-heavy. NVIDIATI

Actually the DT880s are open back, but the bass presence is a little higher than something like the AKG K701 or K702.

You got me! I was thinking of the 770's, which are probably closest to my personal "ideal" headphone for gaming. I haven't auditioned the 880's, personally. Good catch, Boz

I can rip another man's heart out with my bare hands: How much more violent does it need to get to warrant an "M" rating? I don't think things canget much more violent, they can only get more deviant, meaning killing and gore in unusual ways.

The problem with this isn't just that platforms and retailers won't support allow games with the AO rating, it's that making a game both compelling and warranting an AO rating is difficult. What amazing mechanic requires the game be AO?

You can have a great game and have it require a Mature rating; Heavy Rain demonstrated that. I've never come across a situation - which is not to say that it does not exist - where having the developer tone down an AO title to M made a dramatic difference in the gameplay or impact of the story.

I just don't think we "could use more 'Adults Only' games." If a game is made that happens to be good and its content warrants the rating, fine, but developers need not go out of their way.

Happy gaming,

Boz

[QUOTE="Jynxzor"][QUOTE="kraken2109"] Boz will say audio technica ATH-M50.

Thanks for the tip, any other suggestions? I'm having a hard time finding these ones at a Canadian retailer (or even online retailer that doesn't charge out the behind to ship to Canada.)

kraken2109 is right. That said, the Headphone FAQ is limited in its recommendations for simplicity: Too many choices can paralyze shoppers. There are lots of great headphones out there in your range. NVIDIATI's DT880 recommendation is spot on, it's an excellent closed-back headphone, very comfortable, if a bit bass-heavy. I prefer a little extra bass for gaming, though, as it's more impactful. Where in Canada are you? Maybe someone here can recommend a local retailer, particularly if you're near a major city. Happy gaming, Boz

i want to get the hd 419, but i can replace the cable that comes with it. im kinda short(5'5") and want to replave with a 3feet cable.

TheShadowLord07
Looks like that model is not replaceable, not unless you are willing to splice the cable. I usually just use a twist-tie, or swap to an earbud when I'm traveling around. Boz

But do you really think it's blown? Maybe the volume is too loud or something? That's what my first suspicion was.Jobesky123
I don't know, which is why I suggested performing those tests. Did you do them, yet? Boz

I guess I'm the first naysayer. I dislike it, because I don't like really like splash pages. They're obnoxious to me.JustPlainLucas
That's what I thought at first glance, but you have full Gamespot navigation from the home page, still. Regardless, do you still go to the home page when you visit Gamespot after all these years? ;) Boz
