Alright folks, I'm going to revamp the Headphone FAQ over the next month or two. I don't like the organization, it's too wordy, and lacks sound card recommendations. I'm going to rewrite a lot of it, and put in a new Table of Contents that makes more sense.

  • What do you like and not like about the current FAQ?
  • What would you like to see changed?
  • How do you feel about adding pictures just to break up the text a bit?
  • How about SQ charts, like Freq. Response graphs; too techy?

Things I'd like to see added:

  1. I need Sound Card recommendations at various price points, and some rationale behind what supports what.
  2. Some wireless headset recommendations. SQ suffers, but from a convenience standpoint you can't beat them.
  3. A basic on-board vs. sound card discussion.
  4. Something for the console folks. I don't know what this means yet.
  5. Microphone recommendations for head-mount, desk-mount, and on-cord (the Zalman being the obvious choice of the last one).

Thanks,

Boz

Yeah. It was really bad in STALKER: Clear Sky, for example, when standing near certain anomalies.

You may have blown your headphones. Headphones are just like regular speakers, and if you crank the volume, you can blow them. Play some music, and turn it up slowly. If it's crackling more intensely as you raise the volume, they're blown. They will have to be replaced if this is the case. There might be other causes, but this is my first suspicion. Good luck isolating the problem (I hope I'm wrong). Happy gaming, Boz

thanks ravenguard90 I didn't realize those were just 2 channel. I am an competitive FPS player in games like Battlefield 3 and Team Fortress just looking for something to gain an edge. I would think in this day and age someone would create a good true 7.1 headset. I guess I will just buy some headphones off the FAQZaral_1
FYI: You can get that effect from an external processor that supports Dolby Headphone with ANY headphone. Either you can use a sound card that supports Dolby Headphone natively, or use the Turtle Beach Ear Force DSS or Astro Mixamp with a console. Check out the Surround Sound section of the Headphone FAQ for additional detail. And enjoy your new headphones! Happy gaming, Boz

Wish I was going. Would be awesome to see that live Escape From Mount Stupid episode, and to see the Giant Bomb panel in person. Oh well.

This is pretty much my sole reason for going. And really, NOBODY else from Gamespot is going? Boz

I was actually wondering the same thing. im leaning towards the Grado's becasue i've always heard praise about grado's. Can anyone confirm that the SR80's are good?

Wolfetan
They are very good; in fact all of the headphones - even the Creative ones - are very well-regarded among both audiophiles and neophytes, alike. Good list. Boz

Greetings fellow Gamespotters:

Are you attending PAX East this year? Give a shout out below!

Feel free to include the day(s) you'll be in attendance, for what events you are most excited, and your expectations for the event. I'm also a local, so feel free to ask any questions regarding places to eat and travel, too!

Be sure to attend the LIVE episode of Gamespot's Escape From Mount Stupid at 5:30PM in Arachnid. Any opportunity to watch dannyodwyer make a fool of himself is sure to be awesome! :D

Happy gaming,

Boz

Did you read through the sticky? The microphone you selected is excellent, but the headphones you've listed are, well, substandard for the the most part. 100 Euros is about $133 USD, so that puts you in the market for the following, depending on your local availability: AKG Acoustics K-240 (~$90) Audio Technica ATH-AD700 (~$100) (super comfy, bass light, excellent sound stage) Audio-Technica ATH-M50 (~$160) (best value, in my opinion) Shure SRH750DJ (~$150) Grado SR 80i (~$100) Good luck, Boz

Go to Monoprice. Cheap 4 port component switch works well and learns remote commands so you can switch it from a remote if you want also.rastan
Parts Express is another reputable retailer for this type of product. Happy gaming, Boz

can anybody recommend me some good headphones that has a loud and clear bass sound? msrania
Asking this is much like saying, "can anybody recommend me some good cars that has a fast engine and reliable performance? " Sure, but I might suggest anything from a Subaru to an Aston Martin. How are you using the headphones? PC or console? For travel or not? Exercising? What's your budget? Is appearance a factor? The more detail you provide the better the suggestions we can provide. Start with the recommendations in the OP, and go from there. Happy gaming, Boz

I'm all about good audio when it comes to my music and gaming. Anybody know of any good speakers I could get. I like a lot of bass, so something with like a rediculous amount of watts. I might even just try to wire a Kicker L7 into the system. lol

If you're just looking for bass, get yourself a decent 2.1 system. To get similar bass response to a Kicker L7 in a car environment, though, you'll have to spend a good amount of money. You'll probably want to consider a bit of DIY, and buy a subwoofer amp and sub from parts express. You could also preorder one of their Titanic MKIII kits, which will pound like nobodies business, and pair it with a nice set of monitors. Think about it. Boz
