there's only one problem. MGS still hasn't done enough to reinvent itself to appeal to my intrests. I still see the same gameplay, albiet with a shiny new sheen on it, bound together by cutscenes that only diehard fans could appreciate. I find Metal Gear to be tedious, and i'm not interested in playing it at all.THETRUEDOZAH

From what I heard, it's supposed to be the other way around... :?

Tell me, when you think 'JRPG', what games/franchises come to mind, and what aspects of them disinterest you? Just curious. (OTHER than Final Fantasy, which IMO is over-rated anyway)

None other than Final Fantasy. Pretty much every aspect disinterests me, they just don't make any sense. Maybe it is because I am not into Japanese culture and find many of the things in the games to be crazy and strange.

Well, fair enough I guess. I personally like the levels of party customisation and ethical, often storyline-changing choices that JRPGs like the Shin Megami Tensei series provide, Final Fantasy is often too prescribed for my tastes. Mind you, if I assumed all WRPGs are like, say, The Elder Scrolls, I'd probably dislike the genre. WRPGs do tend to have more variety, but then there are plenty of JRPGs that offer experiences a lot different to Final Fantasy, and in my opinion more rewarding.

[QUOTE="smokeydabear076"]There shouldn't be any JRPGs on that list.smokeydabear076

There shouldn't be any WRPG on the list.

Well WRPGs are the best so you are wrong.

Opinion. There are some truly excellent games in both genres. Not that I'm going to bother trying to refute your opinion, sicne in your mind you're already right.:|

Lol JRPGs suck, I don't understand how some people like them. I guess they feel the need to become in touch with the "awesomeness" of the Japanese culture.

a woefully underrepresented genre, to be sure. Tactics Ogre, FFT, Warsong (Sega Genesis), the X-Com games. Some of my favorites that seem to havedissapeared or moved to handhelds.

THETRUEDOZAH

The SNES remake of the sequel, Der Langrisser, is one of my favourite SRPGs (wasn't released outside Japan, unfortunately). A widely branching storyline that let you choose one of 4 alignments (and branches within THOSE branches), funny and well-written dialogue, memorable characters, an EXCELLENT soundtrack, quality visuals, and uniquely interesting gameplay adds up to make a real winner of a game.

Just hoping it'll be out for the VC eventually, fully translated.

and ew, Lufia

another failure.

TriangleHard

Hey, I liked Rise of the Sinistrals. :(

Not SMT 1 & 2, Earthbound or FF6 quality, but still pretty good nonetheless, IMO.

[QUOTE="AfterShafter"][QUOTE="NavigatorsGhost"]nobody has mentioned Final Fantasy Tactics, so you all fail. AfterShafter

Great game, but not top 10 material. No-one has mentioned Darklands either...

it is top 10 material.

just not mentioned it because it is SRPG, which I see it as whole another genre.

I've been in these forums for five years, and have been playing RPGs since before the NES... What's an "SRPG"?

(turn-based) Strategy RPG. Think Disgaea/Fire Emblem, or games like Advance Wars only with characters and levelling instead of generic expendable units.

any reviews on it out yet?

Apparently Gametrailers gave it a 6.8/10. Don't have a link to the review though, I'm afraid.

2D games like Super Metroid and Gunstar Heroes are generally best at this, IMO. Games with excellent storylines such as Deus Ex (admittedly not 10 years old, but still dated) are also good contenders.

However, I downloaded Mario 64 for the VC a few days ago, and though a few elements feel archaic (ie. the camera, and of course the graphics are dated), the game is still suprisingly a LOT of fun to play, and puts many recent platformers I considered brilliant to shame. I just wish I'd experienced it when it first came around, so I could get that sense of wonder moving from 2D to 3D in its full glory.
