surprised to read so many say fromsoft. they're one of the few aaa studios that don't pander, don't conform to trends, who focus on gameplay, produce great world and level design, with no hand holding, and are always value for money. ticks my boxes.

Machine Games instantly come to mind.

I remember as a kid playing Halflife, showing the possible things gaming could do.

But 30 odd years on they thought to themselves "nahhhh", and just made 4-5 hour cutscenes to show off their mocap I don't care about.

Even when ignore this, just make clunky meh games where I'm being told they are actually great, wondering if the world has lost the plot.

i'm only several hours in but indiana jones feels so far like the most overrated game of the year. it's not terrible. they do a good job of creating an authentic indy "experience." but the game bit is as bog standard and basic as it gets. a stealth oriented game whose stealth mechanics would have seemed simplistic 15 years ago. dress this up in anything that isn't indiana jones and it scores 6s and 7s

yes.

tlou 2 showed they're capable of creating fantastic game mechanics and moments of real high quality tension, immersion and atmosphere.

the problem was those sections were few and far between, spread too thinly against a shit ton of cinematics and heavy handed story telling, which caused all sorts of issues, especially pacing.

but the potential is there. evolve their formula, address the cinematics to gameplay ratio, and they could make something very special. there's not a strong likelihood it will happen, but even a modest shift towards more game than story would be progress. can't really judge much from that trailer so just have to wait and see

Excellent speech! Thanks for the tip! This should be mandatory to watch for anyone who wants any type of leadership position in gaming.

I couldn't agree more:

A big win for a speech like this.

Ubisoft is one company that comes to mind that really needs to listen to this. So much wasted talent in the last decade...

million percent. nice find, great speech, gives me some hope for the industry, and does feel like a bit of a fck you to ubisoft

it is weird. there must be a really good reason.

why would they remaster all the things, most of which no one wants, but not the one game most people do want. makes no sense

a few hours in and so far it feels like an "experience" kind of game to me. strip it back to its nuts and bolts gameplay and it plays exactly as it looked in the previews. basic and serviceable and not much else.

but coat that with all the aesthetic, plot, setting and additional mechanics and it does compensate somewhat creating an authentic indy experience which is enjoyable.

the environment is definitely more open than i thought it'd be too. not thrilled about keep accumulating side quests given in so many games they're generally just filler but will keep an open mind for now. the puzzles are pretty good, mechanics combining well and helping with the atmosphere. whether it continues to evolve and develop enough to hold my attention through to the end remains to be seen, but it's definitely better than i thought it would be
