The purpose of this thread is not to condone piracy, I hate pirates. The purpose of this thread is to delegitimize used game sales, because in the end the dev isnt getting money for it, while some useless company like gamestop does. IMO like piracy the dev should do whatever they can in their power to curb used game sales, this includes charging used copies fees for mp and content, without the public backlashing at them.

Kickinurass

The developers is attacking gamers for buying used, rather than rewarding gamers for buying new. So the backlash should be expected.

I'd be more open to something like the Cerebus Network of ME2 - extra incentives for those that buy new.

Why should gamers be rewarded for buying new? they should support the developer not gamespot

On some games for PC even legit consumers get attacked by devs with crappy drm causing problems for the legit consumers while the pirates already cracked around it.

Also I would hardly called ME2 cerberus network rewarding new game sales, that content was probably on the disk and it was more like used copy gamers would be restricted from accessing it.

Gamer A sells a game to gamer B.

Gamer A uses money to buy another game, developer is happy, Gamer A is happy, Gamer B is happy.

If developers were happy I dont think they would do things such as limited content for new copies or charging used copies for mp features

[QUOTE="percech"]It's just as bad. The money from used sales isn't going to the publishers so they're going to cry foul. dc337

100k used copies = 100k copies bought new at some point.

100k pirate copies = 0 copies bought new.

How is that just as bad?

Your forgetting though

100k torrent downloads =/= 100k lost sales (this is because some people were just testing it on their system, using it as a demo because there wasnt one, download it multiple times or were just cheap skates that were not going to buy it anyways)

while 100k used game sales = 100k lost sales

If developers and publishers are so concerned, then they would make their games cheaper...a closer price to a used copy. I mean, damn it's always ok for corporations to screw with people with DLC and overpriced games, but it's not ok for the consumers to want to save money but enjoy their products.percech

What would making the game cheaper do?

If publishers dropped the price by 10$, gamestop would drop the price of the used game by the same amount.

1.used game sales still garner and original sale the other original salesand then a 2ndary sale that can be used towards new games.
2.Piracy can only have the original sale *actually they usually dont since alot of pirated versions are leaked versions* so original sale and only original sale.

WilliamRLBaker

Not all pirates would have bought the game anyway. Some just pirate to see what the game is like, and then would not have bought it regardless of the price or quality, so developers don't really lose money from each and every copy of the game. There's no way of finding out what percent of pirates would have bought the game for sure, and chose to pirate it instead.

thats a lame excuse alot of games have demos, all have reviews, they could have borrowed the game, rented the game. Its a lame excuse to cover up the fact they wanted to get a game for free, when you play a game for hours upon hours often finishing it then it stops being a demo. Id rather an honest thief then a dishonest one its an insult to mine, and these companies intelligence for them to steal a game then tell us but we aren't stealing.

P.S: if used game sales were as bad as piracy why don't we see more developers and publishers trying to stop used game sales?

Actually no alot of games on PC do not have demos, also not all games can run on one's pc so people need to check.

Also developers and publishers are trying to stop used game sales, indirectly that is. They cannot shut down a gamestop because its "legit" in the eyes of the average consumer despite being as bad as piracy to the dev. However publishers like EA are trying to discourage used game sales with exclusive content for new copies or that other model which created an uproar, you know the one where used gamers had to pay to play mp? These techniques would discourage someone buying a used copy for 5-10$ cheaper since they would have to pay 10-15$ in fees for exclusive content or mp.

Why not the developers or the publishers dont see a dime of that money, just like piracy? Pirates claim that they are just sharing games with each other as its their property and they can do what they want with it. People who sell used games say the same thing.

Kinthalis

Pirating games...it's not really a lost sale since those people had no intention of buying the game in the first place. It's also not really stealing. The only person who stole is the original hacker, the rest is just a copy of that same one.

You do not have the right to use games without paying the developer for them.

When you buy a used game, you are not paying the developer for that copy

I buy games used, but not from Gamestop, and simply because I don't find most games worth the $60 + tax. But I wouldn't compare buying a used game to pirating a game if that's the point of this topic.SoNin360

Suprised no one has touched on this but it sickens me the amount of money gamestop makes through used game sales and how the publishers get nothing from these sales.

People cry about how when someone torrentsa game it = one lost sale which simply isnt true; the pc gamer may want to see if it can run on his system or the game had no demo, some games like starcraft 2 were available to download legitametly from torrents

While in the case of used game sales, 1 used game sale = a lost sale to the publisher. Whats worse is a company like gamestop can make huge profits of it without contributing anything to the game itself, at least with piracy nobody makes money.

Then there are the people who support DRM of all kinds and call out all hermits as pirates, but if a company like EA tries to curb used game sales with charging used copies extra fees, EA is labeled as the bad guys.

So my question to consolites is why do you support gamestop? they contribute nothing to the creation of a game yet make more of the game than the publisher, also why are you so hypocritical to pirates when what you do is 10x worse in the eyes of the game companies.

Well us PC gamers like to buy new copies to put money in the hands of the developers and not gamestop who contributes nothing to games. If you think piracy is bad and is killing the industry you should take a look at used game sales. To me their exactly the same, with used game sales the publisher can actually say 1 used game sale= 1 lost sale
