@rcontini: I have been actively playing PS4 and recently got a Switch with Mario and Zelda (the only two games worth owning), and neither of those are better than what we've seen on other consoles, and that's not including the, probably, dozens of games on PC that few played, myself included. Zelda is fairly dull and repetitive, and Mario is fun, but ultimately, forgettable. These compared to something like Horizon, which has the whole package: looks great, has a great story, and excellent gameplay.
I just really can't get into the game much. A lot of it just feels like a chore. Don't like the weapon system, having to constantly switch to new weapons and go into a menu to replace broken weapons is an extra, unnecessary task. Exploration is tedious like with a lot of open world games that think vast, empty spaces are okay as long as they look pretty. Repetitive enemies, side quests, and dungeons. It's interested me more than any Zelda since Ocarina of Time, but I am coming to believe that this franchise simply isn't for me because it seems that there is no game in the series that interests me. I just end up bored by them.
Best horror game in many, many years. And the move to first person was smart. I am a little disappointed with the direction they took the story since before RE4, but I like the story here for what it is as something self contained. One of the much more enjoyable and excitable games I played this year.
A fun game, but I can't help but think there were better ones this year. Heck, Hellblade and Horizon Zero Dawn belong higher on the list. It's a fun game, sure, but it doesn't feel memorable. Once I finished it, I just kind of shrugged, said 'that was fun', and moved on. Idk, maybe Mario games just don't impress me much these days.
@Tiwill44: Which wouldn't be so bad if travel didn't feel tedious and boring. Even with horses and quick travel, the fact that the world is so vast and empty is part of the problem. Most open world games in the past five years give you plenty to see and do between landmarks and towns. BotW seems to be content with just giving you freedom to roam, but that freedom doesn't mean anything if it's boring.
Probably the most fun I've had with a game all year. The hunting in this game is fantastic and tons of fun and I love the variety of gameplay and the challenges from most of the robots. I'd love to see a sequel that does more with it's variety of weapons and traps.
@consolehaven: This actually illustrates one of my issues with Zelda so far (I've just been playing it). Travel doesn't feel fun, it feels like a chore. I enjoy exploration, but the world feels empty and lonely and it's not all that fun to traverse. There's a lot to like about it, but I'm not of the same mind as everyone else in thinking it's the brilliant GOTY.
My biggest disappointments have to be Berserk and Sonic Forces. After Sonic Mania, I had high hopes for the franchise to return to form, but it seems Sonic games can only be good now if fans are the ones making the games. As for Berserk, I'm a huge fan of just about everything that has come from that franchise and this was the first game we'd gotten in over a decade. It should have been much, much better than it was.
Best mobile game I played this year was Simulacra. It's short, probably about 2-3 hours a playthrough once you figure out what to do, but it's probably one of the best narrative experiences I've ever seen in a mobile game. It's also the most compelling mobile game I've ever played, creating a very interesting and unique antagonist. It even creates some frightening moments and jump scares.
