Is there any website that tracks how many people are playing a particular game on Live at any given time?

Whenever I buy an older game, I always wonder if the online community will still be kickin'. Heck, even some cheaper games like Doom and Duke Nukem 3D. It would also help me in deciding whether CoD4 or CoD:WaW is the better purchase...I hear the multiplayer is largely the same, but I wonder if the masses that CoD4 has/had will be moving on to CoD:WaW.

The love died when:

a) remakes started being taken down
b) people realized that it would take hours to make decent levels.

Personally, (a) doesn't bother me since I'd rather play the original rather than some remake (I've played plenty of bad PC mods that attempted a remake). But part (b) kills it for me. I always though it was strange in preview vids when they'd show someone making a level, where the video was clearly accelerated, and then casually say "oh, let's just skip ahead a bit to see the final product." If I wanted to spend hours making a level, I'd fire up Hammer or UTEd.

L4D is a disappointment for horror fans. It's not scary and the zombies are stupid. redneckdouglas

Stupid zombies? You don't say!

Horror fans might be dissapointed, but for zombie fans, L4D delivers.

I haven't had as much fun simply moving down baddies since Jedi Outcast, and Doom before that, but it will be interesting to see how GS rates a game that is just plain fun.

Does it have a story? No, but it wouldn't really benefit from one (it would actually bog down the multiplayer aspect), so should it matter?.

Does it have single player? Yes, as much as a game like Super Smash Brothers has bots to fight against, so should it matter?

Is is short? Not really, replaying the same level plays out differently each time, so should the linear level length matter?

Does it offer a massive, wholeistic package that includes a deep single player campaign, storyline, and the usual multiplayer (deathmatch, CTF)? No, but if it's amazingly fun, should that matter?

IMO Half Life >>>> Half Life 2 > Half Life ep 2 > ep 1

Why? Half Life = great singleplayer, great multiplayer, innovative, revolutionary, many enemies, different settings, boss fights EVERYTHING game should be

Other games in half life series are not as good and dont offer as much content (unless moded)

I just installed half life again yesterday and its awesome even now after many years of not playing it

Lidve

Well, IMO

HL: Opposing Force > They Hunger! > HL1 > HL2:Ep2 > HL2

and (not including L4D yet)

TF2 > DoD beta 3.0(?) > CS:S > DoD:S

But even though I have my favorites, they're all still great games. It's crazy how much gaming goodness HL1  provided over the years.

Thaks HL for all the fantastic games and mods that you've given us!

Makes me want to go back and play through HL1 (updated version), Opposing Force, and They Hunger!

Why do we even need another physical media format? Going through another format war is both useless and counterproductive from a consumer standpoint. Downloadable content will most likely curbstomp all these shiny discs in five years anyways...

There doesn't seem to be a lot of excitement about this game or is this board just lame like that? Anyway, the game is launching tomorrow. Oddly enough, there are virtually no reviews out besides the OXM one (which is a crappy source for reviews) and Edge (I won't include it in my reviews post simply because there's nothing to go by but the number).

But who cares? The demo has been out, it's awesome and that's the end of it as far as I'm concerned. So who's ready for the zombie apocalypse? Who'll be tearing it up tomorrow?

Thanks to Steam, this is one of the extremely rare cases where I'll be playing the game on release day - actually, it's before release day as the game is out in Europe on the 21st. Happily, Steam is worldwide.

UpInFlames

I'm shocked at how much time I spent on the demo this weekend. It's just 1.5 levels and can be completed in under 15 minutes, but it's just so...fun!

I'll be picking up the 360 version initially, just so I can play split-screen with my wife. I'm anticipating a Holiday sale on Steam (like last year), and I'll pick up the PC version once those modders have stuff out >:-)

People are overlooking the fact that Dark Knight comes out on Blu ray Dec 9th and This will SELL huge on blu ray and i even think it will move  a good number of PS3s. Because think about who is the main audience for this Movie, a lot of teens-young adults from ages generally 14-27 is the main audience for this movie and some of those are ones that only own a 360, they want a PS3 but are still on the fence but they are also Dark Knight fanboys and want it on blu ray so they will just go ahead and get a PS3 for christmas with Dark Knight for blu ray. I personally think if Sony came out with a Dark knight PS3 bundle say a 40 GB model and sell it for $349.99 that they would all sell out in a day.

Oh and this thread isnt meant to bash any games that came out for the PS3 this year because I actually think Resistance 2 and LBP will easily break a million copies sold this holiday when its all said and done.. But Dark Knight is going to be HUGE for blu ray and will push a lot of people to buy a PS3 for the Dark Knight.

CODjon84

For sure The Dark Knight will be a huge BluRay seller.

But I'm sure there will be a ton of people that buy the $200 BR players widely available now (and maybe even cheaper on Black Friday).  Why do people still think that standalone players are more expensive than the PS3?Please don't give me the "but the PS3 is a better player and plays games!" stuff, because people actually interested in watching movies at a reasonable price will only see the $200 difference.

Oh, and that $200 they save instead of buying a PS3 can go towards a 360 Arcade (runs and hides).

[QUOTE="Aljosa23"]

Who cares?

The first Half-Life was much better btw.

dgsag

The first Half-life had no story or character development and had less varied envrionments than HL2, so no...

Actually, my biggest dissapointment with HL2 was that they only hinted at a story, but only really started developing it in Ep2 (which totally redeemed it).

I think that I prefer HL1 more simply because it had more of a "OMG WTH is going on?" feeling, especially when the Marines start hunting you down. HL2 didn't have that for me, it was more "Ho hum, here I am mute Gordon again, doing everyone's bidding without questioning anything".

But I'm nitpicking here, both games are amazing, and there's no greater value in gaming than the Orange Box.
