The smartest thing Bill Gates did was keep himself and his non gaming bean counters the hell away from anything xbox related. Now that he's no longer in charge it looks like the non gaming types have forced their way into the game division drivers seat and are about to drive right over a cliff since they have no clue about how the gaming market sector really works.
They won't say "Requires a constant internet connection"
They will probably say something like. "With the next xbox you will always be connected....connected to your friends, to your games and media entertainment...everything! It's going to be great and you are going to love the constant connectivity of the next xbox."
The casual crowd is even flakier than the hardcore crowd. They will probably not understand why their new xbox720 isn't working and go to the store and demand their money back.
Without this massive feedback you can be pretty sure that Microsoft would probably do it. They still might but somebody in the MS offices might say "...umm...guys, you might want to take a look at whats happening on the internet right now, maybe we should re-think this."
