Even if it's a hybrid of some sort, Nintendo isn't special enough to make their own rule. It's a 9th gen home console (with possible handheld integration).
Whatever the Wii U successor is called, that's going to be a 9th gen home console, first and foremost. You can't just bow out and redefine what generations mean, go a little soft and fuzzy on the definition all of a sudden, or say the Wii U was just a practice swing and not really in contention, lol. The more interesting argument that I can see happening soon is not what we call the next console, but what we call the NX software.
When a Mario Kart 9 comes out, will it be called a "next-gen game" since it's exclusive and neither of the current-gen consoles can play it (oh, the Sheep love the ring of that), or will Mario Kart 9 on the NX be current gen? I'm leaning towards next-gen and Gen 9 games.
But then, the problem now is the NX will likely start getting the future Mass Effect Andromeda (or the next MA game), CODs, and new Assassin Creed games that are coming to the X1/PS4/PC. So the NX will likely have "next-gen AND current gen games."
Oh, the Sheep (and Nintendo marketing) would love the sound of that one. I won't attribute a single bit of this minty advantage to careful planning or cleverness though. NX is going to have the unique ability to play Gen9/Gen8 games (and who knows, maybe Gen 7 and handhelds). I'm going to have to warn PS4/X1 owners about a new future conceit we might be seeing these next two years. "The NX can play Gen 9 games and the PS4/X1 can't! HAHA!!"
