I got Skyrim when it came out and rushed through it in a week, then I was in basic training for 2 months and had missed the rise and fall of this meme.
How much to development costs go up when you pay for voice acting from Hollywood stars? This doesn't help the issue of games being too costly to produce these days.
It seems that only the Halos, CoDs and Assassin's Creeds will be able to hit that magic spot of high production values and high sales numbers so that they aren't losing money.
I loved Tomb Raider, but I wouldn't say that the graphics were as good as most AAA games. And speaking of Crysis, a couple of years ago I borrowed Crysis 2 from a friend, and I probably only played the game for an hour before I lost interest and went to playing something else. The shiny graphics in that game couldn't distract me from the "meh" feeling that I got from the rest of the game. I can appreciate good graphics, but very few games have the substance to back it up.
I feel like the quality of graphics that we are at right now is more than good enough. I think we should wait for the cost efficiency of making good graphics to catch up, give some time for developers to get better at optimizing. They should focus on innovating in areas other than graphics.
