Well the games that are shader intensive like oblivionand newer games like stalker, the 8600gt beats the crap out of 7900GS, the 8600gt will perform better in future games because they will be designed to take advantage of the unified shader, people hate the 8600 cards because 128 interface, because for a few months back a while there was this thing called 8600Ultra that everyone was going crazy for.
aaron its good card it doesnt get hot uses low power, meaning it can be OC'ed very good, heck it gets better results on 3dmark than a 7900GS so go with that card, just make sure its the DDR3 version.
8600GT is a good card I dont know why people are afraid of it, its a very nice mid range card, my brother in law has it runs most games on high settings, I tell him to OC it but he thinks it might go bad, but I am sure with some OC that card would be very nice for 100-150$ budget, the only thing holding that card is the 128 interface, but its built on better architechure than a 7 series, plus it has a unified shader architechure which is a big plus.
Yes you can there are recommended requirements and there are minimum, minimum usually means running games on low settings and low res and barely playable.
Well yea everything takes power to work all the components, a bad PSU can mess your computer, I never understood why some people bought uber rigs but got a mediocre PSU, its one of the most important things in your computer nothing can run without it.
Dont listen to people, if you got the money buy it, but if your going to get a Ultra get a really Overclocked one, because if your getting a stock Ultra its really not that much faster than a GTX.
