It wouldn't be soo dumb afterall just to get 8600GT and wait until the 9 series come out, they will be better and Nvidia and ATI will have some experience with the DX10 by then, its the first DX10 GPU's so the technology is with these things is still not the best, so if you have patience my friend you can also buy a 8600GT and wait for the second gen of DX10 GPU's.
I would definetely get the 8600GT, scores better on 3dmark 06 than a 7900GS, runs never games better, is dx10 ready and its cheap as dirt, you can get one for 100 bucks on newegg plus with some OC, you can get it up to 8600GTS, so its a great deal. I am thinking your probably on a budget, because a 8800 GTS kills them both but we are not talking budget no more.
If you already got a decent computer and dont need a monitor, probably less than a 1000, get yourself a 8800GTS 640Mb and a e6600 quad core and lets say two quality gigs of ram and your set.
Couple months ago i bought big rigs for 3.99 just to see how horrible it was. I laughed my ass of when the race started and the other truck didnt move, and at the end says You're Winner eheheh funny game
I used to bash it a lot until my brother in law bought it, its actually pretty good, if you keep your resolution at 1024x768 you can probably max out all the games right now.
