wii-u-cpu.jpg

A report obtained by Wii U Daily suggests that the Nintendo Wii U CPU is based on the IBM 710 Express chip, but is underclocked at 3 GHz and comes with 4 cores and 8 threads. The new CPU is said to be 20X faster than the chip found in the original Wii console.

Wii U Daily?s Japanese source, which originally leaked theWii U system specs, now elaborates on the main processor. The Wii U CPU, as we know from Nintendo, is made by IBM and is based on their POWER 7 architecture, and will be built on 45nm. The new details reveal that the Wii U CPU is modeled after the 710 Express IBM server processor, which as standard has 6 cores and runs at speeds of up to 3.7 GHz. The 710 Express chip can also execute 4 threads per core at the same.

In order to save on production costs, Nintendo has scaled down the processor for the console. The Wii U version of the CPU will scale down the cores to 4, the clock frequency to 3 GHz, and threads per core will go down from 4 to 2. This means theWii U CPUwill be able to execute 8 threads at the same time. The current Xbox 360 CPU, also made by IBM, can execute 6 threads at the same time.

On paper it looks like the Wii U is ?around 50% more powerful than current gen systems? as analysts suggested last year, but in reality, the console is likely to be much faster than the raw numbers suggest. This is due to the new features and the architectural improvements of the POWER 7 design. Overall, the Wii U CPU is said to be 20X faster than the IBM Broadway chip found in the Wii.

While Nintendo isn?t expected to reveal any CPU or hardware details at E3, the NDAs developers signed will likely expire after E3. This could pave the way for developers to share some of the specific hardware design features of the Wii U, including the CPU, GPU, RAM, etc. We?ll have to wait until then to see whether this rumor holds true.

wii-u-dev-kit-features.jpg

According to tipsters over at the NeoGAF forums, the current Wii U dev kits have received a few more features, including video chat via the Wii U controller?s camera, voice commands, and multitasking. Thesourcecites the following additions to theWii U dev kit:

  • Video chat via the built in camera in the controller
  • Facial recognition software via the same camera
  • Multitasking and the ability to run multiple Wii U apps at the same time, e.g. switch between playing the game and browsing the web.
  • Voice commands (via the microphone in the controller)
  • An achievements system plus the ability to send screenshots and game videos to friends on theNintendo Network.
  • Ability to watch a friend play online (live streaming)

We can?t say that we?re surprised to hear these features ? they all sound like something that would naturally be part of a next gen console. Nintendo will likely unveil all the Wii U operating system features at E3,including variousWii U channels, like theWii U Virtual Console, the browser and internet apps, and more. We previously reported that Nintendo had shipped the final versions of the dev kit to software makers earlier this month. The newly added features were likely present there, but developers have received proper documentation and software tools only recently. Officially, they aren?t allowed to talk about the Wii U console in any form until after E3, where Nintendo is expected to lift the NDA on developers after its June 5 press conference.

Stay tuned for a lot more Wii U info. E3 is just a week away from now, and Wii U Daily has secured spots at the Nintendo press event and at main event as well, meaning we?ll be bringing you all the latest and greatest Wii U news from E3. The PC version of Remedy's Alan Wake has recouped all its development and marketing expenses in less than 2 days.

This came as a surprise even to Remedy who has hesitated for a year before porting the game from Xbox 360 to PC. At one point before launch, Remedy ruled out the possibility of the PC version completely and expressed its belief that Xbox 360 is "the right platform" for the game.

Not entirely correct, because this is just the model branding - for example the G92 GPU was used from the 8 series to the 200 series probably with minor tweaks in between.

KiZZo1

That only applied to low end models. All the high end models use new tech.

G92 powers high end models in 8,9 and 100 series.

and the 8800gtx was 2x more powerful then the 7800gtx, humm how was that possible if still used the same g92 chip, obviously it was produced with new tech, smaller process and arch changes. I agree with the 9 series though, that was pure rebranding.

Not even a quad Nvidia 580/AMD 6970 setup can handle 4096x2160p gaming at contsant 60fps. Plus a screen with that as the native resolution does not even exist and even if it does when the PS4 is released it will cost over 2k. I think it just supports that resolution output for movies etc but not for gaming.

Well I'd rather have a 128gb SSD than a 1.5 TB HDD, but both would be fricken excellent.

4096x2160p resolution support? Sounds highly unrealistic. but Sony 4KHD projectors have been around for YEARs.

If i remember correctly the PS3 technically could support 4K gaming but only at a maximum framerate of 24fps.

When you hear 24fps and 4K it applies to video playback.
