[QUOTE="heretrix"]

As many people said here, Sony waited a week.

Maybe you like being Bs'ed and kept in the dark, but most people don't and all of the bowing in the world isn't going to change that.

As far as hacked websites go, this is pretty standard stuff and it isn't the first time Valve has been compromised. The big difference here is how long before they got it under control.

How long was Sony's entire worldwide corporate internet presence in complete disarray? 3 weeks? For a company of Sony's size that is completely unacceptable.

heretrix

6 days vs 4. 2 days is a big enough difference to justify the huge outlash against Sony? I guess it's a good thing they didn't wait 2 more, people probably would have started car-bombing all their offices and facilities...

No dude, the complete breach of Sony's entire internet infrastructure was compromised across all their corporate divisions and they acted like nothing happened for a week.. That IS a valid enough reason for people to be pissed. I don't even understand how you could even compare the two in ridiculously simple terms like that.

It's not surprising that people don't remember what really happened now, since everybody was so busy exagerating it and making stuff up back then. They both got breached. The exact same data was vulnerable during the breaches (name, address, birthdate, purchase history, HASHED passwords, ENCYRPTED credit card numbers). Both said there was no evidence that CC numbers were accessed, but to monitor your accounts anyway. (Sony was more helpful in telling you what to look for, and where to go for help.) They both waited a few day while investigating after they discovered the breach before revealing what happened... Valve waited 4 days, Sony waited 6. Sony pulled the PSN down, and phisically moved their servers to a more secure location, then rebuilt their network security infrastructure from the ground up, which left the network offline a few weeks, but didn't stop you from playing sp games, watching movies (including netflix) or any other features of the system. The situations are almost identical, other than having to live without online multiplayer.

I know one thing... I bought a PS3 today!!! but it was off craigslist so I dont think sony will see those numbers. I figured it was time. my 55inch lcd was screaming for a bluray player and I figure I could spend a few bucks more and get the ps3, so now I have every console. I did buy the uncharted double pack for 40 buck new though, so i gave them a little money.

Congrats.

theres many factors. for one valve/steam let us know early on what was going on. second, so far no CC info has been compromised but they at least say to keep a watch on your cards as their can always be a risk. it took sony quite awhile to warn us about CC info. third, steam hasnt gone down or anything unlike psn which saw an outage of nearly 2 months i believe it was. steam has been running all along with alot of users still not even aware as it has not hampered their gaming in the slightest!

Valve said CC likely not taken, but advised you to monitor it, 4 days after they discovered an intrusion. Sony said CC infor likely not taken, but advised you to use caution, and provided a pile of things to watch for and where to go to monitor it or ask questions, 6 days after they discovered an intrusion.

Two reasons: Sony took over a week or so to let people know their data may have been compromised.....Steam told customers to change their passwords ASAP.

Sony's data wasn't protected or even encrypted....Steam encrypted the credit card and personal data.

That's why one hack was a huge deal and one isn't.

KC_Hokie

6 days vs 4 days.

Both had hashed passwords, encrypted CC numbers.

[QUOTE="ianuilliam"]

]Forgot about this thread, till I saw you quoted me in your sig... Awww, I'm flattered. Anyway, I'm not actually saying that at all. Let's say right now, every single 360 game was made playable on PC by a Windows update (note this doesn't necesarily work both ways... They can make all xbox compatible with windows pc, but can't make all pc games work on the xbox, due to varying min sys reqs on pc games). Anyway, say I don't have any system at all, and I want to buy one. PC has pc excusives, plus pc/360/ps3 multis (which now includes all games previously ps3/360 only), plus pc/360 multis (which now includes all games previously 360 exclusive). The only games not on pc would be PS3 exclusives. There's no reason at all to choose 360. You'll go with either a PS3, for the exclusives, or a pc, at least as far as the libraries go. Now let's say you already have a pc, or are getting a pc regardless, and are going to get one console. Its a no brainer, as there aren't any games on the 360 you wouldn't already have access to. If there are no exclusives, there's no reason to get it.

But more to the point of what I was talking two posts, regardless of whether it turns out to be great for MS, or even great for people that buy the next box, by the current metagame, the nextbox will fail hard here in SW. We compare AA+ retail exclusives... If every game is playable on pc as well, it will never have a single exclusive, making it the obvious metagame loser, unless the rules of the game are changed to accomodate it... Like when you have to start playing flag football, instead of tackle, to accomodate the one kid who cries when he gets hurt.

ohthemanatee

so in the end, I'm right

as a consumer you're better off with this system because regardless of what system you choose: you get more games

as a the creator of this system you're better off because regardless of what the customer buys: you get a sale

so... again am I in lala land?

P.S. well at least my sig makes sense :)

I admit, I only vaguely paid attention to these rumors... but what I got from it is that 10/loop/720 games (and maybe 360 games via bc?) would all be compatible with win8, and thus playable on pc. That does NOT mean that pc games would all be playable on the ten/loop/720. That's the whole point of what I'm saying... so no, you won't get more games regardless of which system you choose... you get more if you choose pc. If you choose the 720, you don't get any games at all that aren't also on other systems.

Going with the current gen, as an example, PC may have more exclusives than 360, but if I prefer the 360 exclusives and ps3/360 multiplats over the pc exclusives, 360 is better. If an update made every 360 game available on pc, that changes... a lot. Now the pc has every game that 360 does, plus all the pc exclusives. There may still be some other reasons for picking it... but as for games, which should always be one of the primary reasons for picking a game system, there would be 0 reason to buy the 720.

Does that still not make any sense? Or maybe I'm wrong... and the rumor is that pc and 720 games will be mutually shared... but I don't see how that could work, unless 720 will have fully scalable hardware, and the games will have varying system reqs... at which point, it is 100% a pc, and shouldn't be considered a seperate platform anymore than Mac is (which was one of the possibilities in my original post).

This is the way to handle to a situation such as this. Get everything out in the open so people can protect themselves. That's much better than denying it happened or downplaying it, only to revise your store a week later.lhughey
Lets's compare: PSN, intrusion happened somewhere between 17-19, and was discovered on the 20th. On the 26th, they made this announcement:

"Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:
We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:

...

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information for those who wish to consider it:

...

We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please contact us at 1-800-345-7669 should you have any additional questions.

Sincerely,
Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment"

I edited out some of the extra info and contacts.

Now, Valve gets hacked on the 6th, and as far as I know it was the 10th when they made their statement.

"

Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.

We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.

We don't have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely.

While we only know of a few forum accounts that have been compromised, all forum users will be required to change their passwords the next time they login. If you have used your Steam forum password on other accounts you should change those passwords as well.

We do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn't be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password.

We will reopen the forums as soon as we can.

I am truly sorry this happened, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Gabe."

So let's compare. Sony took 2 days longer than Valve, but at that point they disclosed what they knew. The data compromised was almost identical (name, address, log in, hashed password, purchase history, email, encrypted CC numbers). Both said they didn't think cc info was taken, but advised people to monitor thm, just in case. The Sony statement went into a lot more detail with things to watch out for, and where you could go to monitor things and report anything suspicious, and the Sony one is a little more formal, while the Valve one is a little more personal feeling (which is due to Japanese vs American cultural differences), but other than that, they read so close they could be form letters. Really, the only difference so far in how things are handled is that Valve was 2 days quicker in their investigation.

I really hope the 360 crushes the PS3 in sales this year. But know previous years, this won't be much a stretch to accomplish.

jimmypsn

Interesting. So far, PS3 has outsold 360 for the year 3 times, 1.4 million, 2.2 million, and 2.3 million, and 360 has outsold PS3 for the year once, by 0.1 million. So... "from previous years, you know it won't be much of a stretch for 360 to crush PS3 in sales this year?"

[QUOTE="TheBigXboxski"] Dude give it up already. You are in a loosing battle but on the other hand keep it up, I need some comedy during a work day. Carry on.rasengan2552

What battle am I losing, just so I understand?

LOL ... why are you still using that gif in your sig ?

Because it's amusing? I don't change my sig often... I didn't take out my joke sig about Forza flopping till yesterday. I'll probably leave this one till something else funny comes along. Why would I change it? I mean, sure, if it became factually incorrect, like if there was a retraction, and Sony didn't actually sell 3.8 million by day one, or like people with sigs with MC scores, and the score changes.
