Steam machines are doomed to fail due to the fact that they are not mass produced, for this reason their prices can never be competitive.
Steam came at this pretty half assed, if they really wanted market share they would have massed produced these single SKU Steam machines with their own brand and their on money, but they would cost billions, so its not meant to be.
You can't compete against console manufactures who buy parts in millions of units, and build them in millions of units.
This is capitalism showing its stride, you cannot compete against bulk assembly line manufacturing, and corporate loss leaders.
Who ever thought that Steam units would be a good idea was insane. Sony and MS buy GPU and CPU in quantities of hundreds of millions, these small time manufacturer can't compete with those price margins. The idea is doomed to fail.
Wow 700 comments damn the PC defense force is working overdrive.
Anyways, here's an idea, save your money, go buy a brand new 4K TV it'll come with WiDi and just use your TV to stream your Steam game from your PC from anywhere with no wires.
Problem solved, now you can enjoy all your favorite Steam games on your new 4K TV and you didn't have to buy one of these monstrosities. Thank me later.
None of these machines will sell, considering all 4K TVs are built with WiDi you can pretty much stream your PC to your TV on all new TVs sold today. Making Steam Boxes useless.
For the price of one of these machines, you can buy brand new 4K TV and just stream your Steam game to your TV via WiDi, why waste your money on these.
Look at those crazy prices. LOL. Can't see this going main stream at those ridiculous prices and the R&D on those are horrible, way too ugly to be main stream.
Lower prices, better chassis design and maybe these things will sell.
@jim_peterson: You don't need them in the same room, ever heard of wireless keyboard and mouse, you can also stream your PC to your TV via WiDi which is built into every 4K TV.
Like I said I got a 4K TV and I play all my Steam games on my TV, my PC is miles away from my TV.
