The EU was never really canon. They said you can consider it canon unless something in the movies contradicts it. You can still do that, they're just more honest about the fact that they don't care about the EU. In fact, I thought they actually made Thrawn true canon, whereas before he was just EU canon.

SgtSaltnPepper hates PC Culture and SJWs because Disney is trying to be accurate. That is why "PC Culture and SJWs" continue to be relevant, because there are too many people who use the anti-PC bandwagon to defend regular incorrectness. Maybe PC goes too far, but anti-PC is very frequently laziness that doesn't go far enough. SgtSaltnPepper and his ilk don't represent some rational middle ground, they are an extreme that forces the continued existence of the opposite extreme.

@Zero_Maniac@ivanthemonkey: That is correct, but note that it doesn't mean they are more powerful, if that's what you meant by "a step up", only that they are harder to obtain. In fact, I believe they are frequently weaker than Legendaries.
