@makchady: “cult following” ≠ “hidden gem”
My definition isn't “narrow” just because he used the wrong words.
If words mean anything, at least.
Your “he clearly meant...” should be waved in his direction, not mine.

That's admittedly impressive,
but I seriously doubt anyone, including world-famous professionals,
can tell the difference between this,
and a monitor with literally half its refresh rate,
using nothing but hands and eyes.

I don't think the writer understands what a “cult following” is.
It's not just a game which is good, but didn't sell very well.

It's a game that has formed a somewhat obsessed community around it,
that keeps coming back to play regularly.

Spec Ops: The Line was a game that everyone was talking about because of its ending, but to say it formed a “cult following” is pushing it. I don't know anyone that played it more than twice.
Personally I think the game got way too much praise. The ending was different and unique, and I appreciate that, but it doesn't change the fact that the initial 99% of the game was generic.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the
West
was a good game, with great production values, and I enjoyed it very much. But it was totally linear. Old school linear. No choices to make whatsoever. There's nothing there to talk about and definitely no cult around it.

Catherine is another one. Very unique and fresh, but also pretty straight-forward. Aside from which choices get you which endings, there's really not much for a community to form around. Lord of the Rings has a cult following. Dark Souls has a cult following. Catherine is not that type of game.

Binary Domain is a game I bought because I didn't do my research and it was really cheap. Turns out it wasn't the genre I thought it was. I had trouble getting into it, so I looked for info online, and there really wasn't that much. That alone tells me there's not many cultists out there. I gave up after level 1.

Generally cult-followed games have a very rich-feeling world with a strong atmosphere, that feels like it is has history and mystery. Either that or it has incredibly tight, deep, flashy combat, that is endlessly replayable with a sky-high skill ceiling. I don't think a lot of the game on this list qualify.

@lonewolf1044:
I think the game itself will be better than people expect,
and that people will be interested in what it has to offer,
but not interested in the gameplay.
I think it will sell well, but definitely not at $60-70.
I think a lot of people will just watch it on YouTube instead.

As a big Lord of the Rings fan,
I just cannot see how this game is supposed to succeed.

@trer24: “Can you see why many people want to resist being what a heterosexual white male tell us to be?”
"It's gOnE oN LoNg EnOuGh! PAy AttEntioN to Me noW! ME!!"
“make sure everything is centered around the heterosexual white male”
“As long as the heterosexual white male is on top”

You're the only one here saying this stuff buddy.

Why do you think it is that you need to generate a straw man
before you start your argument every time?

Maybe it's because you're not all about justice and peace and equality and representation and diversity, etc. etc.
Maybe it's because you're angry and resentful and want to see damage done to the people you don't like.

@teshammutna: Right enough, it's arguably too early to tell
if it's trying to be woke or not,
but I'd say the way they're keeping an arm's length away from anything that looks like a heterosexual white male is probably an indication.
The image used for this article does a good job of demonstrating what I mean.
