@zmanbarzel: Thats liquidity and debt free means only that SQ is debt free not the studios its unloading and the wording is meant so the deal pass with the speed it did, when there is debt, a report has to be made public since that would mean money problems and to make all the shareholders at ease that everything is being done proper.
When avengers had a budget of 150 million and performed the way it did you can bet there is a massive red line in underperforming sales.
@BeefoTheBold: You are missing the picture of how much debt both those studios were carrying, because if SQ ended the quarter in the red and had to explain how much cash it lost to avengers and guardians it would have driven the stock price lower which would have hurt them much more in the rest of the fiscal year.
I doubt SQ was betting on NFT, for starters they would have done a trial period like all japanese businesses practice, they wouldnt have dive blindy pouring hundreds of millions into a unicorn, they know better to bet on the black chocobo.
Am pretty sure embracer bought whatever debt they have and they are going to absorb the deficit by gutting both studios and merging them into one, if any. This move remind me the episode of billions when axe cap decides to collect a defaulting town they owned and sold everything. Nothing is stopping embracer from selling each of the IPs separately, which would be the smarter move seeing they have no idea into developing and releasing quality games.
@BeefoTheBold: Not really, the units sold + the development costs make them popular but not profitable specially giving that the last tomb raider ( trilogy) took 10 years to complete. So prolonged development eat the revenue in the long term. Now they said sold the rights but which rights, will we see lara croft coming out happy meals, legos of legacy of kain, and so on.
So far it only looks like they can develop only games with them. Not movies, shows, toys and so on. LIke the bethesda deal gave MS the rights to develop tv shows based on fall out.
SQE must have been losing money each year on western studios hoping to recoup the costs at launch.
I played both and liked them both, combat was much better in Los2. Anyone praising god of war 3 and trashing this are hypocrites. Plot of GoD 3 was like an uwe boll movie, it took me like 10 hours to beat gow3 on hard, while LoS1-2 gave me like 40h each of pure fun.
While on the first one, i didnt have a controller at the time since you could play DMCs at the time with mouse+ keyb and be SSS but LoS1 had a couple of sequences that required you to make a circle O_o!!! On some bird nest and another part, which was impossible with keyb, luckily i wasnt the only one without a controller and somebody on steam made a script so you could emulate a circle with the push of a button.
I was stuck for a day probably in that part till i search the web. Which also, at the time i just started living on my own so i didnt even had internet!! Yes!! I had to go to a cafe to leech web to search for the solution!
@miguelgreene: Yea, all those 3 had redeemable things, like on dredd you had diane lane with leggings that now girls get banned from going up the airplane for. Tank girl had a young naomi watts with her long forgotten native accent and spawn had a memorable john leguizamo as the clown.
