@MoronGotMyName @the_requiem @berserker66666 Don't worry bud, am not giving up or bending over. I am NOT going to buy an always online console. All I said was that long way into future it will happen. I work in networking industry and am already aware of products that will take us there. e.g. A single cable/wire carrying your internet, power and TV signal.
@Prime_28 @pongley @blackzio @fadersdream Key here is option. Gaikai being an optional service. What if Gakai streaming was the only way to play games on PS4, including all PS4 games?
@pongley @Prime_28 @fadersdream What if Sony offered something like this [hypothetical of course]:
1. Always online not required but no Backwards Compatibility either. You can play PS4 games offline as much as you want.
2. If you agree to be always online, Backwards Compatibility with Gaikai and access to EVERY SINGLE PS3 game. But you will need to be online even to play single player PS4 games.
Point being, always online providing a tangible enough incentive.
@Stedmister @the_requiem Good example, coz it provides a service that requires you to be always online and provides incentive for you to be always online... provided you got the net to use it. Or way Sony plans to us Gaikai to provide Backwards Compatibility. If BC in PS4 required you to be always online in return for each of your PS3 game to be playable on PS4... don't you think many folks will actually opt for it if they had the net to use it?
@MoronGotMyName @the_requiem @Zeeksie Step backward? Can you tell me what point in past we had "always online" devices/consoles? How many of your devices were online 10 years ago? 20 years ago? How many of them are online today? Cars, microwaves, watches, refrigerators...
@MoronGotMyName @the_requiem @berserker66666 I agree, but thing is big brother future is already here. Saudi Arabia is banning BlackBerry because it uses encryption for communication. US govt. doesn't allow encryption that is too strong for them to break. Everything online is being watched. Guess what it means in world where everyone is sharing every single moment of their lives "online"? More and more "devices" have twitter and facebook in them.
@Zeeksie @the_requiem Where am I encouraging them? Only a fool would think that we won't have always online in the future [not just consoles, but almost everything]. And only an idiot would think that an "always online" console will be a good idea right now. And I, good sir, am neither.
@berserker66666 @the_requiem Not sure of that. Unless "always on" gives great enough incentive most gamers will go for a console where they can choose to be always online, not forced. The "always on" future will not be here to stay until every console [and PC] is always on.
@Germaximus Issue is not people being online to play multiplayer games, as you said most folks already are most of times. Problem is forcing people to be online. Today you have a choice, you can be always online or always offline. More choice is always better for consumers. A better way would be to keep the choice, but give enough benefits to be always online so that more and more folks "choose" to be always online.
