Nintendo really needs to focus on "Quality of Consoles" instead. How about a modern incarnation of the SNES? All you need to do is observe how Sony nailed it this generation with a non-gimmick, straight gaming system.

Yes Nintendo. It's been falling since 2008 when tablets and smartphones came to the forefront of the industry. Parents will not be inclined to pick up a dedicated gaming device for their kids when they can buy a smartphone for the same amount of money and keep their children just as entertained with simple game apps like Angry Birds, Minecraft, Candy Crush, and Fruit Ninja. It saddens me that it took Nintendo execs 8 years for this epiphany to dawn on them.

@wanderingknight: The iOS would be ideal if developers could keep pace. Apple releases new hardware about once every 18 months, so significant overhaul in conventional game development would be needed to ensure high quality and compatibility across multiple product generations. Not impossible, just damn difficult.
Prioritizing quality of games on smartphones and tablets is a good idea - that's where all of the money is from a market share perspective. But to do that effectively they need a stable platform. SEGA should work with a manufacturer like Samsung, HTC, or LG to create a tablet and phone using a highly customized version of the Android OS (similar to Kindle Fire); that would give their developers a fixed and stable amount of hardware/software resources to optimize games on their SEGA branded devices.
