America likes money, pop artists that hypnotize you and steal your money and it goes to record label boss's. They promote the talent to a minimum 'cause only higher beings are able to comprahend the amazingness. So it means LESS money...

Sometimes you people piss me off. Many of those people who supposedly "like" crap music only like it 'cause It's ALL that they're hearing. All that's being marketed to them. There IS such a thing as bad music. Ironically enough The Sound of Muzak by Porcupine Tree just came on...

Every time I see dmadfearmonger post this is what I imagine he looks like.

sl

He's basically saying that same exact thing.

I remember when I was a 14-year-old music elitist too, it's a phase you'll grow out of.

There's no such thing as bad music. I think almost the entire underground/indie scene is pretentious trash does that make it trash?

Cuz that's how we roll. I think the mainstream is terrible (majority of it). Whenever I hear something from the early 2000s and before it and then listen to something that's out now, I wanna cry.

Yes, but people have differing ideas on what's bad.

Believe it or not, there are people who think the music you listen to is bad.

Or maybe they genuinely like what they listen to and don't like the sort of music you listen to? Has that possibility ever occured to you?

It often does not occur to people who take elitism to a new level.

What do you listen to?

GreySeal9

Beethoven, Chopin, Death, Cynic, Gordian Knot, Exivious, Agalloch, Yngwie Malmsteen, Jason Becker and many others.

You're entitled to your opinon, but really, I think the idea that any of that stuff, with the exception of Chopin and Beethoven, is better than The Beatles or The Stones or Radiohead is downright lauaghble.

I disagree with him that the beatles, stones, and radiohead suck, but I disagree far more strongly with your opinion that Cynic, Death, Yngwie and Jason Becker are laughable in comparison to Beatles, stones, and radiohead.

That's not a trend. That's a wisdom. And they play Pink Floyd on the Radio too don't they? All got to do with your station. "Fresh pop hits FM" or similar radio stations are the bad, evil ones. So I don't like to say Radio music so much as mainstream music. They don't play Tool on MAINSTREAM radio do they? They play that on the GOOD statoins.

Here in Chicago they play Tool on Q101 which is a big alt rock station. It's definitely a mainstream radio station.

It's more that people are stupid enough to be unable to tell the difference between quality and quantity. But I'm done with this. I'm obviously not getting any message through to you. I got it good. I'm happy with the music I listen to 'cause I know it's brilliant. You win, 'cause I honestly couldn't care less if other people wanna listen to awful music anymore.

I've met some incredibly intelligent people, with piss poor taste in music. I don't think anyone is a fool for liking what they like and not liking what they don't. While I do think that the music they listen to is crap, I think you should have a little more respect for others. You're taking it way too far, and it's not really making you look too good.

Dream Theater, Tool, Radiohead, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, Rush, Steve Vai, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Pink Floyd Those are a few. I listen to a fair few indie and Underground artists too. Though not Deep and Complex most of the time they can be very talented and creative.

[QUOTE="Lockedge"] I would very much disagree with you. England has had some more high level success, for sure, and might have historically more top end talent, but Eng;and's talent pool thins out really really fast, especially in recent years. And I say this as someone who has Bowie, Radiohead and Genesis albums (plural) in my top 10 albums of all time.Lockedge

England still has great music. Sure a lot of crap comes out of there, but there's also a lot of magic.

I ll never deny it, but recently, England has lagged far behind the USA in terms of "better than good" acts, and is probably even with Canada in output....which is kind of sad.

I guess so.

Besides Porcupine Tree, what else do you like? I am curious.

Wow, I a dissapoint...

I figured that with the authority you use when speaking about music, you would listen to more complex and technical music than that... I mean, its like I figured you were listening to the truly brilliant artists of thw world... instead, you are listening to the same stuff everybody who knows what an arpeggiated sweep listens to...

[QUOTE="DmadFearmonger"]When maggots piss me off I tend to get serious... If you knew me when I'm in a good mood I'm an entirely different person.DmadFearmonger

Why exactly are you pissed? Because other people have their own tastes?

It's more that people are stupid enough to be unable to tell the difference between quality and quantity. But I'm done with this. I'm obviously not getting any message through to you. I got it good. I'm happy with the music I listen to 'cause I know it's brilliant. You win, 'cause I honestly couldn't care less if other people wanna listen to awful music anymore.

Have you ever considered that other people have a different idea of what is quality music? Have you considered that people are happy with their music? I know I wouldn't trade what I listen to in for Dream Theatre.

If it's classical and jazz you're talking about. I'm sorry but that crap bores me to tears. I wont deny their compossing ability is brilliant. But their music is just so dull.

[QUOTE="DmadFearmonger"]Good point. I'm done with criticising these fools with their crap music. Guess I'll just let 'em rot 'cause I know I got it gooooodDmadFearmonger

Thats not how I meant it... what do you listen to that so superior?

Deep, complex and technically brilliant rock bands that play what they love. Not someone who writes for the money.

I don't neccesarily think writing for the money is a bad thing if one is talented enough.

I mean, Elton John wrote some great songs in the 70s and he admitted that he does it partly for the money.

That being said, his 80s work (with the exception of a handful of songs) and most of his 90s stuff is pretty awful.

I suppose it just boils down to personal taste. Everyone has preferences and something they want out of their music, and what they have patience for. Personally, I can't listen to any speed metal. I appreciate the skill it takes to play fast, but it just kills any ability to compose music that isn't soulless; It's just too technical and hollow. Yet, my friend can't listen to slower jazz, folk, ambient, etc. because it can't keep his interest.

Its because you don't have the musical aptitudeto truly understand it...I mean, I can understand that, considering your tatses, but in comparision to what I listen to, your musical repitorie is severly limited...

They're really not memorable enough for me to bother spelling their name correctly, but anyway, I'm not sure why you ever thought you were going to "get somewhere". You have your music taste and other people have theirs. Do you really think anybody is going to abandon their music and listen to what you think is so brilliant?
