There's a bill in North Carolina that is going to be on the ballot this election called Amendment One. It would change the state's constitution to prevent not only gay marriage but ANY sort of legal recognition of gay partnerships along the lines of Civil Unions as well Link [quote="Amendment One"] "Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State. This section does not prohibit a private party from entering into contracts with another private party; nor does this section prohibit courts from adjudicating the rights of private parties pursuant to such contracts."

One particular church in the state has been particularly active in organizing support for this Amendment, even forming an advocacy group titled "Vote For Marriage NC". As it turns out, the church's pastor isn't one of those "hate the sin, love the sinner" types, or at least he subscribes to the "tough love" school of thought. Special dispensation to beat children who act gay Apparently beating the crap out of your kids if they start acting a little different than normal gender roles is the way to go if you're in his church. [quote="Pastor Sean Harris"] "So your little son starts to act a little girlish when he is four years old and instead of squashing that like a cockroach and saying, Man up, son, get that dress off you and get outside and dig a ditch, because that is what boys do, you get out the camera and you start taking pictures of Johnny acting like a female and then you upload it to YouTube and everybody laughs about it and the next thing you know, this dude, this kid is acting out childhood fantasies that should have been squashed.
Can I make it any clearer? Dads, the second you see your son dropping the limp wrist, you walk over there and crack that wrist. Man up. Give him a good punch. Ok? You are not going to act like that. You were made by God to be a male and you are going to be a male. And when your daughter starts acting to Butch you reign her in. And you say, Oh, no, sweetheart. You can play sports. Play them to the glory of God. But sometimes you are going to act like a girl and walk like a girl and talk like a girl and smell like a girl and that means you are going to be beautiful. You are going to be attractive. You are going to dress yourself up.
You say, Can I take charge like that as a parent?
Yeah, you can. You are authorized. I just gave you a special dispensation this morning to do that."

Now, I could be wrong, but I'm not sure this is the message that Jesus had in mind. I particularly like the audio link with all of his congregation "amening" to his suggestions on parental discipline. I miss Gabu for topics like this.

its odd that in these types of "uphold marriage" laws, marriage never changes either way. gays tend to get screwed over though.

at least call it what it is.

Waiting for the first parent to **** slap their 4 year old boy for wearing a dress, only to cry on Good Morning America that the pastor told him to do it. Then a reduced sentence and 4 weeks of google news feeds about how this pastor has special powers and forced the parent to follow his commands.

I doubt that many of the people who call themselves "christians" are really christians at all. It's not about beating up or condeming gay people, it's simply about loving and forgiveness and not judging people. It's pretty obvious that pastor never read the Bible because if he did he would know that Jesus said not to judge lest ye be judged and to not point out the speck in your neighbors eye until you get the log out of your own.

I find it funny how a lot of religious people don't want gay people to marry and say it will destroy the sanctity of marriage, when it's us STRAIGHT COUPLES that are the ones actually destroying marrige. Divorce rates are 50% in this country, so mabey they might want to deal with their own problems first before they go out preaching to gay people.

Straight couples are going to ruin the sanctity of marriage, not gay people.

Maybe the older, and evil mind you, sister forced him to wear it to be the 4th opt in for her evil teddy bear tea party. Que the slightly older sister sitting next to her blubbering father stroking her teddy bear with a devilish grin.

It's very difficult to beat the gay out of someone. You have to know exactly where to hit, at what angle, and at what speed. For some reaon, it also helps to be wearing the "wife beater" t-shirt when attempting such an action.

No it's not reasonable. A few idiots saying stupid things in a huge counry with a monster population isn't worthy of that statement and Toast says it in every thread about something happening in the US.

*Sigh* Glad I don't go to that church. Obviously one of our more vocal and militant pastors (we don't need anymore of those. looks at Jeremiah Wright), but to be fair he doesn't actually say beat the gay out of your kids. In fact the only thing in this quote that could be taken as violence is "crack that wrist" and "give him a good punch". I'm going to assume he meant smack on the wrist and give him a manly punch in the arm or something. But I could be wrong.

On the surface I agree with the Amendment (does not recognize gay marriage but does not do away with contract rights between partners). Although I do think civil unions should be recognized for the various alternative lifestyles.

They are extremist Muslims who don't necessarily represent the views of the majority of their faith and are probably an embarrassment to many of their faith, but they are Muslims.

If someone doesn't believe in God but believes in Jesus is he a true Atheist? What is "true" anyways in beliefs?

Honestly, I don't see why people should get so fussed up over this.

Thank god I don't live in America.

Still it's very sickening that stuff like this happens anywhere in the world.

It's not legal. It's just some proposal by some bassackwards dude.

It's not just the beat the gay out part that iritates me. But also the bill that doesn't allow same sex marriage and civil unions.

The crazy child beater is just that, a crazy guy. The bill is actually a legal document.

I am a christian and proud of it but I am not one of the over the top kind. I do not agree with homosexuality at all, but like someone else said, hate the sin, not the person. I get mocked at work from some gay guys at my job for my beliefs ( so its not just christians bashings gays, sometimes its the other way around). But whenever I get tired of their crap, I usually own them with this " If nature intended for two dudes or two girls to be together, then how come two people of the same sex can't have a child on their own?" They usually shut up and go about their day after that lol.

[QUOTE="Funky_Llama"][QUOTE="Pirate700"]Do you really have to say this everytime someone does or says something stupid in the US?

Pirate700

Seems a reasonable sentiment, given that America is (in comparison to other Western countries) exceptionally accomplished at this kind of religious bigotry

No it's not reasonable. A few idiots saying stupid things in a huge counry with a monster population isn't worthy of that statement and Toast says it in every thread about something happening in the US.

I do apologise, I'm just not used to different states having different laws, so I always view America as one country with one set of laws.

If nature doesn't intend things to be gay then why is it that homosexuality is found in over 1000 species?

Sure, but what I'm suggesting is that the proportion of people who say such stupid things is higher in the USA. The UK is much more secularised and irreligious than the USA, and that's the way toast_burner and I like it

That is why it is called a Bill still. It isn't law. It needs voted on. Nearly every country has tried to get something crazy voted on. How can you have a democratic society where you introduce GOOD bills to be enacted into law if you have biased individuals who determine what is good or bad before a vote? Are you putting on an act or actually... that?

[QUOTE="nocoolnamejim"][quote="Pastor Sean Harris"] "So your little son starts to act a little girlish when he is four years old and instead of squashing that like a cockroach and saying, Man up, son, get that dress off you and get outside and dig a ditch, because that is what boys do, you get out the camera and you start taking pictures of Johnny acting like a female and then you upload it to YouTube and everybody laughs about it and the next thing you know, this dude, this kid is acting out childhood fantasies that should have been squashed.
