I would say that is sort of cynical but I was sort of thinking the same thing. They say you don't need root kits but steam really is the root kit. At any rate, steam is the least obtrusive anti-piracy device we have so I am for it.

I am surprised more people haven't mentioned the cost yet. Whether your pc or their server processes a game, someone has to have the hardware to do it. If they have the hardware, they will charge for it. You do gain some economy of scale savings since not all users would be on at once, but still the cost of a server running Crysis on high settings for a hundred people at once would be tremendous.

If someone can only afford a $500 computer, how will they pay the inevitably high fees that will come with this. We pay $15 a month for mmos on which the servers do far far far less processing. My guess is that they will have to price themselves out of the market or make it run more simple flash style games.

One user said that this is what the criticism sounded like for steam when it started. The one big distinction is that Steam is free.

hmmmmm I can't think of any legitimate reason to use utorrent. Maybe buying games legally would solve your problems.

some of the longest games were the old rpg's. I think of Daggerfall (elder scrolls 2) as one of the longest. Also you could count many perpetual games if you wanted I guess mmorpg's and online fps' can take up huge hours. I have spent hundreds of hours on strategy games too. But if you're talking about a game where you play through the story, the early 90's rps are surely the longest.

the release date is pushed back. no one has a copy yet. Amazon does this a lot with pc games where they guess at a release date. Its almost never right so I would come here and look up the games release date in the future.

If I were you I think I would wait a little bit. The reason is that I believe every mobo I have seen that can take an I7 processor requires DDR3 memory. This is the future and the I7 has a new socket size (LGA 1366). If you buy a mobo now and go with a LGA 775 socket it will limit your upgradability in the future. Of course you could stick with AMD but to be honest they haven't really come to the table with a reasonable (price to speed ratio) processor to compete at the high end. If you must upgrade now, the only reasonable choice would be AMD though. As far as a case, this is a very personal decision. The favorite case of builders seems to always be an Antec 900 or 1200. These are very well built and have great airflow. Personally I like my cases to look a little mopre interesting though.

There is a pretty good one called torque that would be the way to go. Having said that, if you are really interested the only way you will get results you are happy with is to take some classes on game design. Like thusaha said you also will need to know a language like c++ but this is actually the easy part.

In the latest update the new spy animation causes server crashes. due to this, most servers have turned off these animations. Its not your computer or installation its the server you are playing on. Valve should have a fix out soon so servers can turn the animations back on.
