There's some rather weird games on this list. Tetris? Really??

I agree with a lot of people below about ACO - I've not even played it, but judging on how much I enjoyed AC Origins last year I'd be staggered if it wasn't also fantastic.

The game I've enjoyed the most this year was Kingdom Come; Deliverance. Quite a few bugs etc, but a long, engrossing, beautiful game that had a lot of great ideas. The game I'm looking forward to the most now is Kingdom Come 2 (please, please, please!!)

Having said that, I've yet to play RDR2 and based on the fun I had with RDR, I expect it to also be amazing.

2 things immediately surprised me about this list...

First - no Halo CE?? One of the most well respected and game-changing games I can remember (and I'm pretty old). It made the 360's fly off the shelf. It looks like GTA3 beat it to GOTY in 2001, which (imo) isn't even the best GTA game. Speaking of which...

Secondly, how can GTA5 not be on this list? We all know the records it broke, and continues to break. It was beaten in 2013 by Legend of Zelda; A Link Between Worlds? How??

The rest, meh, but I do think those 2 massive games should have been on this list somewhere. Also, to show I'm not completely biased towards my xbox, how about the huge PS games like Unchartered and The Last of Us??

For the record, the game I enjoyed most this year was Kingdom Come; Deliverance (although I've yet to get my hands on RDR2; Christmas present, etc)

Different stroooookes, it takes, different strooookes, it takes, different stroooookes to rule the world! (I thank you)

I tried to download this on my xbox a couple of days ago - but it's not listed anywhere on the MS store. I'll try again later.

You mean 20 best...not 30.

@93ChevyNut: It certainly adds up, what with the FFB wheel and that (about £500 in total?) but dear God it's worth it! As I'm sure you (but clearly not your wife) already know! It makes the world of difference to racers like Dirt Rally or Project Cars. I used to love playing Driver San Fran on it too, though obviously you were rather limited in what you could actually do. Will have to stick with them in the absence of any trucking stuff.

Maybe your missus will get you a playseat for Christmas? ;)

@93ChevyNut: Likewise. I've got the G920 on my One, again with the H-shifter and 3 pedals set up in front of my Playseat Evolution. It's superb and great for racing games (which I always play with a manual box and a bumper / cockpit cam obviously!), but I do think I'd love a trucking game. Spintyres just didn't really do it - you can tell that the cockpit cam is just tacked as an afterthought (which is ok - I'm not complaining - at least they ported it over from the pc) on and keep needing to pick up and use the controller every few minutes.

I'd love to try one of the trucking games but don't think that will ever happen.

Keep on truckin'!

@Eric_Drav3n: Sadly my pc starts to smoke whenever I open Excel so I don't think it's up to the job of running a modern game. I have an xbox, and a driving seat with wheel and pedals all set up in front of it and I'd like to give it a try on that. I've got Mudrunner but that's not the best with a wheel and pedals and I don't think there's much else out there apart from, obviously, Forza's and DiRT and stuff like that.

@93ChevyNut: I can kind of see it - for example I understand the attraction of those trucking games like eurotrucker (though I can't get them because they're not released in the UK) but I always thought that was because I like driving, and the scenery would be interesting. It's probably one of those games that if one of them ever came out on Games with Gold I'd play nothing else for 6 months but wouldn't be able to tell you why!

I really don't see how these games sell. I mean, I've never been a farmer but it doesn't look a particularly easy or fun job. So they turn a mundane, hard, repetitive, tiring job into a videogame?? I just don't get it.

So, you wander around planting crops to feed your cows and chickens so you can sell their beef / milk and poultry / eggs so you can buy more cows and chickens? Then what?? I know I'm missing something - sometimes you'll find a game like this and think this looks rubbish, then find you've poured 200 hours into it and loved every minute of it.

But how???

@lorddaggeroff: I just started thinking, right, I'm never buying that game...then realised it was a mobile game, so I was never going to buy it already.

Phew!
